Treated bamboos should be used indoors, under cover and in generally dry areas. The treatment protects against fungus and insect attack, though a good quality finish is recommended especially in coastal regions.

For outdoor use or where bamboo is exposed to rain, untreated bamboo is recommended as the treatment method is non-fixing meaning constant contact with running water will leech away the preserving salts. 

Various timber finishes can be applied to bamboo to increase its life-span and accentuate its aesthetic character.
